New MC First 30 Days Checklist for Trucking Companies
RGI Dispatch guide for US owner-operators and new MC carriers.

Your first month is about building a reliable process

A new MC authority creates an opportunity to begin freight operations, but it also brings unfamiliar procedures. Rather than chasing any available load, build a repeatable system for documentation, broker screening, operating costs and trip communication. Timing and requirements vary by carrier.

Days 1–7: Verify operational readiness

Confirm applicable authority and insurance requirements before operating. Organize your tax and business documentation, insurance certificate, equipment information and contact details. Make sure necessary safety and hours-of-service practices are established for your operation.

  • Verify active authority and accurate contact information
  • Confirm insurance and applicable operating requirements
  • Prepare carrier documents
  • Review equipment readiness and servicing

Days 8–14: Research brokers and freight markets

Make a short list of brokers serving your equipment and lanes. Ask whether they currently consider carriers with your authority age; do not assume a particular broker accepts every new MC. Use load boards to learn where freight is posted and how the appointment windows affect trip feasibility.

Days 15–21: Practice evaluating whole trips

Build a worksheet for gross load revenue, loaded miles, pickup deadhead, likely extra empty miles, and estimated expenses. Compare delivery markets before approving freight. Keep notes on why a particular load did or did not fit.

Days 22–30: Review your process

Track onboarding results, common reasons for rejection, time spent searching, miles driven and recurring expenses. These observations help refine your process even if the first month does not include a steady flow of freight.

Watch for these early mistakes

Do not promise arrival times that violate realistic driving constraints. Avoid sending sensitive paperwork to unverified contacts. Do not treat a high posted rate as proof of profitability. Avoid relying on a single broker or one load-board posting as a business plan.

Build your next-month plan

Identify brokers to follow up with, recurring lanes to research and equipment-specific opportunities. Keep your insurance and compliance details updated. RGI Dispatch can discuss whether outside dispatch support would make sense for your workflow.
